Mike Roe
Writer

Who is Mike Roe?
No, I’m not the Dirty Jobs guy. He's Mike Rowe. Completely different. Still, as a writer, I rely on keyboards, which studies have found to be breeding grounds for E. coli and other enterobacterias. Despite the dangers, I’ve written long- and short-form copy, including thousands of taglines, for print, the Web, radio, and TV.
Since starting my writing career in Los Angeles in 1996, I’ve provided concepts and copy for:
- Motion picture studios (movie poster taglines and theatrical trailers for 102 Dalmatians, Hell Boy and hundreds of other motion pictures and television shows)
- Toy companies (packaging for The Simpsons and How to Train Your Dragon)
- Vegas casinos (websites for Vdara and Aria)
- Plastic surgeons (websites for Santa Rosa Plastic Surgery, Portland’s Key Laser Institute, and for tens of others)
- Publishers (banner ads, print ads, Google AdWords campaigns, and book jackets for authors such as Ben Stein, Barton Biggs, Ken Fisher, and John Bogle)
In 2008, I provided a case study on writing SEO copy for Atlantic Publishing’s The Complete Guide to Writing Web-Based Advertising Copy to Get the Sale.
Oh, and I’m Writer/Editor at AgencyND, and a Scorpio. My Myers-Briggs personality type is INFP (Introversion, Intuition, Feeling, Perception).
What do you do at AgencyND? What’s so cool about that?
Anything. But, mostly, I provide content/copy. Everything.
What do you do in your down time?
Write. Read the works of my favorite authors and writers (Kurt Vonnegut, Terry Southern, Frank O’Hara, Oscar Wilde, Joe Orton, Edward Albee, Sylvia Plath, and Rachel Fellman). Listen to The Smiths. Sit at coffee houses, writing, reading, and listening to music. I also love to “hit some thrift stores.” And by “hit,” I don’t me “knock-off,” but rather “shop at.” Finally, to take my mind off of writing, I like to make “art” pieces out of a combination of illustrations and text from old paperback books and LPs. Of course, I rarely have time for any of the above, as I’m usually doing whatever it is that my two French Bulldogs—former shelter/breeder dogs—demand of me.
What did you dream you would do when you were a kid?
I don’t have much memory of my childhood, but it probably involved a jet pack.
How did it come about that you work at Notre Dame?
Providentia. That, and a great deal of hard work, late nights, and networking. Mostly, though, because of a great deal of hard work, late nights, and networking by a good friend from my college days here at the University of Notre Dame.
